Choosing the Right Keywords for Effective Shopee Ads
ShopeeXpert, Sherynn Ooi, shares her valuable insights on a common mistake that many sellers make when running Shopee Search Ads: choosing the wrong keywords.
In her words:
“The most important factor to consider when running Shopee Search Ads is the keywords you choose to bid on. Wrong keyword selection can lead to unnecessary clicks, increasing your ad spend without generating any returns. Always put yourself in your buyer’s shoes. If they’re searching for your product, what would they type in the search bar?”
Sherynn recalls an example from one of her students, who approached her after class with disappointing ad results—plenty of clicks but zero conversions. The problem? Poor keyword choices.
Real Example: Gauze Fabric Cloth
Product: Gauze Fabric Cloth
Keywords Used: Birthday, DIY, Gift Box, Tutu Skirt, Wedding
While these words are related to how the product could be used, they’re not what buyers would typically search for when looking specifically for “gauze fabric cloth.” That’s the issue—intent mismatch.
If you’re selling gauze fabric cloth, you should bid on exactly that keyword—not on broad or indirect use cases.
The product’s uses should be detailed in your product description, not the search ad keywords.
Why Relevance Matters
Highly relevant keywords help improve your ad’s quality score, which in turn lowers your cost-per-click (CPC) while giving you better ad placement.
On the other hand, bidding on unrelated keywords lowers your quality score, forcing you to raise your bids just to compete—often resulting in wasted ad spend.
For instance, if someone searches for “birthday” and sees your gauze cloth ad, they might click out of curiosity but leave once they realize it’s not what they wanted.
That’s money spent on a useless click.
Better Keyword Strategy: Be Specific
Let’s look at a better example.
Product: School Bag for Kids
Suggested Keywords:
School Bag
Beg Sekolah
School Bag for Kids
Kids Backpack
Beg Sekolah Perempuan
Beg Sekolah Lelaki
Yes—go as specific as possible, even by gender!
How to Find the Right Keywords on Shopee
Go to the Shopee homepage and type your product name (e.g. "school bag").
Take note of the auto-suggested keywords. These appear in descending order based on search volume over the past 30 days.

Use a simple trick: type “school bag a,” “school bag b,” “school bag c,” etc. You’ll uncover even more highly searched, relevant terms.

Remember to jot down or copy-paste these keywords for future reference.
