Why HTTPS Matters: Chrome's Security Updates You Should Know

Google believes that a safe, secure web should be the standard — and users should always be alerted when a website is not secure.

Since July 2018, Google Chrome began marking all HTTP pages as “Not Secure.”

In September 2018 (Chrome 69), Chrome started simplifying its security indicators by removing the “Secure” label from HTTPS sites, replacing it with a simple lock icon.

Before this update, HTTP websites didn’t have prominent warnings.

But starting October 2018 (Chrome 70), Chrome began displaying a red "Not Secure" warning when users entered any data on HTTP pages — like forms, login fields, or payment details.

This move was part of Google’s ongoing effort to make HTTPS the default, creating a safer experience for everyone.

How to Secure Your Website with HTTPS

To get HTTPS status for your website, you need to install an SSL certificate on your web hosting.

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate encrypts the data exchanged between your website and your visitors, protecting sensitive information like emails, names, phone numbers, and payment details.

By 2018 standards — and even more so today — SSL is not optional

Visitors expect a secure browsing experience, and browsers like Chrome actively warn users when a site isn’t protected.
