Reflecting on FoodBank.Digital: How We Came Together to Support Over 51,000 Families

The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2019, caused widespread disruption to lives and livelihoods in Malaysia. 

Business operations were restricted, and unemployment rates rose significantly. 

By May 2021, data showed that 52.2% of the unemployed had been without work for less than three months, while 10.2% had been unemployed for more than a year. 

Many low-income families struggled to get by without stable income.

In response to this crisis, the White Flag Campaign emerged on 30 June 2021. 

It was a grassroots movement where families in distress placed white flags or cloths outside their homes as a call for help—signaling their need for basic necessities.

To support these families, Exabytes Network Sdn. Bhd., along with EasyStore, EasyParcel, and Pgeon, launched FoodBank.Digital on 3 July 2021. 

This initiative aimed to deliver essential food supplies to underprivileged communities. It was a food-sharing campaign powered by the community and created for the community.

Over 36,000 Families Were Still in Need

As a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program led by Exabytes, FoodBank.Digital united people from all walks of life to support those most affected by the pandemic. 

While the campaign received requests from over 51,000 families, it managed to provide food boxes to around 15,000 households—leaving over 36,000 families still in need at that time.

This reality was a sobering reminder of how great the need was. 

Yet, it also showed how much could be achieved when people came together. As the saying goes, “many a little makes a mickle.”

A Role for Everyone

During its run, FoodBank.Digital invited participation from both individuals and businesses. 

The community was encouraged not only to donate but also to spread awareness and amplify the campaign’s reach.

EasyStore users played a unique role by promoting the campaign directly on their online stores using a specially developed widget. 

This made it easy for store owners to engage their customers in the movement.

To encourage awareness, the widget could be installed in just a few steps via the EasyStore Admin Panel:

3. Click FoodBank.Digital

4. Click Install

EasyStore A Role for Everyone

RM60 Helped Feed a Family for a Week

Each food box distributed through FoodBank.Digital cost approximately RM60 and could feed a family for an entire week. 

The items included were carefully selected to ensure they met basic nutritional needs.

The campaign was made possible through the collaboration of Exabytes, EasyStore, EasyParcel, Pgeon, and thousands of kind-hearted contributors. 

It was a beautiful reminder that together, we can achieve more.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Although FoodBank.Digital has concluded, its impact remains. The campaign brought hope, relief, and a sense of unity during one of the most difficult times in recent history.
