Tips for New Sellers: Choosing a Low-Cost Payment Service
In a previous post, we discussed the importance of payment gateways for online businesses. However, for new e-commerce sellers, budget constraints can make it challenging to invest in a payment service. If you're just starting out and looking for a low-cost payment solution, here are some practical tips.
1. Start with Bank Transfer (No Subscription Needed)
This is the best option for absolute beginners with no budget.
Simply provide your bank account details and payment instructions.
No setup fees or transaction fees.
The downside is that it lacks security, and you may lose some sales due to limited payment options.
2. Look for Free Payment Gateway Promotions
Some payment providers, such as MOLPay and eGHL, offer free sign-ups during promotional periods, which can waive setup fees that typically range from RM399 to RM499.
Transaction fees still apply, but only when you make a sale.
Online banking is a preferred payment method for many Malaysian buyers, making this a good option.
3. Choose a Transaction-Based Fee Model
For sellers with a limited budget but expecting some sales, a transaction-based fee model is a practical choice.
PayPal, for example, charges no setup fee but deducts RM2 plus 3.9 percent per transaction.
While transaction fees may be slightly higher, this eliminates upfront costs and allows you to start selling with minimal risk.
4. Want to Accept Credit/Debit Cards? Choose a Low-Cost Provider
Accepting card payments can be expensive, with standard setup fees reaching up to RM900.
eGHL offers a more affordable option with a promotion price of RM399, making it one of the lowest-cost choices in the market.
Final Thoughts
For new sellers, the goal is to start small and scale up. Choose the payment method that best fits your budget and business needs. Have more questions? Drop a comment, and I'll be happy to share my suggestions.
