Follow This Six-Step Process to Ensure Your Marketing Message Sells
Too often, companies invest significant time and money in developing their logo and the visual aspects of their promotional materials—important elements of effective marketing—while giving minimal attention to their marketing message. However, crafting a compelling marketing message is just as crucial to successfully promoting your business. It should receive at least as much attention as the development of graphic elements, commonly referred to as the "look and feel."
Here is a six-step process to help ensure your marketing message resonates and drives sales.
1. Capture Attention with a Clear Headline
Grab the attention of your target audience with a headline that clearly defines who you are addressing. For example, if your product is for retirees, your headline might say, "If you are 65 or older."
2. Identify Customer Needs and Pain Points
Understand the problems, symptoms, needs, and desires of your target audience. Start from their perspective and guide them toward taking action. For instance, if you seek retired volunteers, your subheadline could read, "Looking for a way to make a difference in the lives of others?"
3. Provide a Brief Product Description
Highlight key features of your product or service that are relevant to your target audience. Describe them from the customer's perspective—focus on what they are gaining, not just what you are selling.
4. Emphasize Benefits and Value
Clearly explain the benefits and value customers will receive from purchasing your product or taking the desired action. Ensure these benefits align with their needs and interests.
5. Establish Credibility
Support your message with testimonials, case studies, or money-back guarantees to build trust and reinforce your value proposition.
6. Include a Clear Call to Action
Clearly state the action you want customers to take. For example, "Pick up the phone now and call 111-222-3333 to register." This is more effective than simply listing a phone number and assuming they will call. Provide multiple ways for them to take action, such as phone, email, fax, mail, or website.
By following these six simple steps, you can craft a marketing message that truly sells. Just like your logo, a well-developed message can be consistently used across all your promotional materials—from a 30-second introduction to your website.
