Why "PM pls" Could Cost You RM50,000 in Malaysia
In the world of online selling, it’s common for buyers to comment “PM” (personal message) or “DM” (direct message) to ask for prices and product details privately.
But did you know that using phrases like “PM for price” is actually against Malaysian law?
According to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP), this practice violates consumer rights by withholding essential product information that should be publicly available.
This regulation exists to ensure transparency, allowing consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.
This issue gained serious attention when a 41-year-old seller was reported by the public for doing just that — asking interested buyers to "PM" him for product details and pricing, without clearly stating them upfront.
The case highlights a common but risky mistake many online sellers make without realizing the legal consequences.
What Must Be Included in Your Online Business Listings
To comply with Malaysian consumer laws, every online business must clearly display the following details:
Registered business name (or the owner’s name if a sole proprietor)
Contact information
Product description and specifications
Quoted prices
Shipping fees/taxes
Payment methods
Terms and conditions
Failing to provide this information can lead to a hefty fine of up to RM50,000 or up to 3 years in prison, under the Consumer Protection Act 1999.
How to Sell Safely and Legally Online
Yes — starting a business from scratch can be tough.
But that’s why e-commerce platforms exist today to help entrepreneurs build their brands legally and professionally.
Modern platforms offer built-in messaging tools, pricing display options, and customizable product pages so you can comply with the law while running a seamless business.
Let this be an important reminder for all online sellers in Malaysia to adopt ethical, transparent, and legal practices — and to stay innovative while doing so!
