Carrying the weight of homesickness, the founder of Jia Xiang Home left his beloved Pangkor Island, a quaint fishing village in Perak, to pursue a career in marketing and graphic design in bustling Kuala Lumpur.

While navigating city life, he never lost sight of his hometown’s potential. 

Seeing an opportunity to share Pangkor’s fishing culture and fresh dried seafood, he made a bold decision to leave his full-time job and start his own business — one that has since captured the hearts of seafood lovers across Malaysia.

The Story Behind Jia Xiang Home

Tell us a little about yourself and what you were doing before this.

I grew up on Pangkor Island, a charming fishing village in Perak

Before returning to my hometown to build my online business, I spent several years working in Kuala Lumpur as a marketer and graphic designer.

 But deep down, I always believed in the potential of promoting my hometown’s fishing culture and local products — especially fresh dried seafood. That’s how Jia Xiang Home came to life.

What inspired you to start this business?

Living far away from home for years made me realize how hard it was to find truly fresh dried seafood like what I could easily get in Pangkor. 

I missed home terribly, and often looked forward to friends or family bringing me a ‘taste of home’ — the dried seafood I grew up with.

I wanted to recreate that experience for others — delivering the memory and flavors of home to anyone who loves authentic, high-quality dried seafood from Pangkor Island.

What challenges did you face selling online, and how did you overcome them?

One of our biggest challenges is dealing with delivery timing and logistics

Malaysia’s delivery infrastructure still has room for improvement, and delays can affect the freshness and quality of our products.

To tackle this, we closely monitor and control each step of our supply chain to ensure customers receive only the freshest dried seafood. 

Additionally, our products are available through physical distributors in areas like Klang Valley, Penang, Johor, and Sarawak — giving customers more convenient access.
